Plastic bag campaigner on New Years honours list

Plastic bag campaigner on New Years honours list

There has been little recognition for the waste and recycling sector in the 2010 New Year's honours list with just two people from the sector singled out.

The list is used to acknowledge exceptional achievements or service across a wide range of fields in the UK, including the environment.

Wildlife filmmaker Rebecca Ann Hosking received a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for her work in helping the South Devon town of Modbury to become the ‘first plastic bag free' town in Britain.

Miss Hosking had worked on a documentary in Hawaii and encountered damage caused by plastic waste on marine wildlife. This led her to set up a campaign to rid her hometown of Modbury of single-use bags and replace them with alternatives, such as cornstarch or paper bags.

The campaign came into effect in June 2007 and prompted similar campaigns across the country, with London Councils acknowledging her efforts in its own push to limit or tax single-use carrier bags (site letsrecycle.com story).

Miss Hosking has since stepped away from the campaign to return to wildlife filmmaking.

Also acknowledged in the honours was Ronald McNab, founder and former managing director of Livingston-based Caledonian Alloys, near Edinburgh.

Mr McNab received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the recycling industry, as Caledonian Alloys specialises in recovering material from alloy production and manufacturing to be remelted.

Mr McNab could not be reached for comment.
