Waste firm invests in slow speed shredder
A Telford-based waste company has invested in a slow speed shredder which will enable it to process refuse-derived fuel (RDF) on site for export to energy facilities in Europe.

Telford-based Cartwrights Waste Disposal Services say the Terex TDS 820 twin-shaft slow speed shredder, sourced from Finlay Central, will have significant implications for the company.
Cartwright’s owner, John Cartwright, said: “We’ve been zero waste to landfill for three years with around 6,000 tonnes of material passing through our transfer station every year.
“But the Terex TDS 820 will see annual throughput increase to around 15,000 tonnes by taking waste from outside companies.
“That means we’ll have to recruit more people and expand the fleet to meet growing demand.”
Cartwrights has a 34-strong workforce providing collection, recycling and disposal as well as integrated waste management services.
The Terex TDS 820 has an independently-driven twin shaft set-up enables two two-metre long shafts to run bi-directionally – designed to keep wear even and reducing wrappage.
The machine is powered by a constant speed Scania engine and can be configured to suit specific requirements so maximum production levels can be maintained.
Finlay Central sales executive Tom Moran said: “The Terex TDS 820 is a highly versatile machine. With powerhouse material reduction it’s an asset to Cartwrights and really proving its worth.”
Warwick Ward joins Ecohog dealer network
Recycling equipment supplier Warwick Ward has started to stock the Ecohog range of recycling separation technology.

Warwick Ward was established in 1970 and is currently the UK flagship dealer for CASE construction equipment and the sole UK distributor for TANA Shark slow speed waste shredders and landfill compactors.

PK Safety launches new waterproof safety boot
A new waterproof safety book has been launched by PK Safety, the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specialist based in Abercynon, South Wales.

The model BX-700 Voyager Boot provides “total water protection”, according to PK Safety, and is ideal for environments where a worker may be exposed to excessively wet and muddy environments such as in industries including recycling and waste.
As with all Lightyear Safety Footwear, the Voyager Safety Boot has a non-metallic composite toe cap and midsole. This makes the Safety Boot light and more comfortable than Safety Boots with steel toecaps, according to PK.
The company added: “There is a 100% waterproof membrane to resist any moisture ingress. The sole is made of slip resistant PU double density material rated to SRC with an anti-slip sole pattern, which means it has been tested with soap on a ceramic tile and glycerol on a steel surface. The overall safety rating of the Voyager Safety Boot is EN20345 S3 WR SRC.
“For comfort, the Voyager Safety Boot is constructed out of smooth leather with mesh inlays and a padded tongue and collar. A scuff cap protector provides added durability. The heel of the Safety Boot has a hard wearing rubber support system with a shock absorbent comfort footbed. There is a very wide size range of 3 to 13 to accommodate all feet sizes and both men and women.”
Amey introduces AMCS software at Waterbeach
Waste management company Amey has chosen recycling software specialist AMCS’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to manage its waste treatment facilities.

Initially the AMCS ERP software will support operations at Amey’s Waste Management Park at Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. The 400-acre facility employs a range of recycling and processing technologies including Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT), In-Vessel Composting (IVC) and a materials recycling facility (MRF). The facilities recycle over half of the 300,000 tonnes of general waste it receives every year from the households and businesses as part of the waste PFI contract with Cambridgeshire county council.
The new AMCS ERP system will replace a number of existing systems, ensuring that all the operational functions on-site are fully integrated. It will also provide detailed cross-business information on waste movements, helping identify areas for operational efficiency and optimising the amount of material that can be recycled or recovered for re-use, according to AMCS.
Amey’s business improvement manager, Stephen Kendall, said: “We needed a new IT system which not only supported our business but would be flexible and adapt to fast-changing technology.
“The new system allows significant modernisation of the way we manage our business, including mobile applications to help manage our operations, a dedicated client web portal and Google map integration.”
Once fully deployed at Amey’s Cambridgeshire facility, the system can be extended to support the company’s other waste treatment projects.
COPEX launches new range of hydraulic scrap shears
French metal recycling equipment specialist Copex has launched a new line of hydraulic scrap shears.

Specifically designed for shearing and compacting light to medium-heavy mixed scrap, the S-Wing range has a reinforced structure for robustness. Through the specific design of their compacting wings, the company says that each one can achieve “outstanding” compacting performance.
Copex said: “They are very easy to install on a scrap yard, as they require very simple and cost saving civil works. The S-Wing which complete the range of Copex Lidex and Reflex are available in three cutting forces: 650, 900 and 1000 tons.”
It added: “ The new COPEX scrap shears S-Wing are the perfect fusion of experience, knowledge, robustness and performance of the French manufacturer and have two main advantages to inspire the market: high durability through their reinforced structure combined to high compacting performance due to the wings compacting performance. Additionally, they are easy to install on a simple concrete slab for optimised cost of investment.”
The shears are designed to process a variety of scrap materials such as: long profiles and tubes, welded structures (cladding, crinolines), collection scrap and diverse elements (tanks, vats, chassis ELVs etc).
