PDM Group, which deals with commercial waste including materials from supermarkets, said last week it will develop a plant at Silvertown, in the borough of Newham, to make a recycled oil from organic waste including meat products.
” The new facility represents a massive step forward in the drive to deliver a cleaner, greener energy. “
– Philip Simpson, PDM Group
The plant will also recover energy from animal by-product waste.
The company intends to convert up to 45 million litres of tallow and used cooking oil a year into biodiesel, for use in PDM's own transport fleet and by local transportation vehicles.
Philip Simpson, PDM group spokesman, said: “The new facility represents a massive step forward in the drive to deliver a cleaner, greener energy. It will incorporate a renewable energy facility, including combined heat and power plant and a refinery.”
Planning
The development, which will include a complete remodelling of the existing plant at Silvertown, is due to open in two years, subject to planning.
PDM will create 32 new jobs and intend to reactivate the site's wharf to transport biofuel by river.
The renewable energy plant will be modelled on PDM's existing plant in Widnes, Cheshire, and will create electricity for the local grid and heat for process steam or local heating.
The company said: “The development of a combined facility will provide a secure, sustainable recycling system for biodegradable materials generated in the Greater London area. East London will soon have its own source of renewable energy.”
