The morning session will be kicked off by Balfour Beatty’s Heather Bryant, as she presents a case study on the small steps the construction industry took which led to big successes.
This provides the perfect opportunity for the waste industry to learn some of the success stories in the construction sector.
The health, safety, environment and sustainability director will share advice on measures taken by Balfour Beatty that led to dramatic improvements in engagement and performance across the company – and she will crucially provide the links between these changes and some of the common challenges faced by the waste and recycling sector.
In 2019 Balfour Beatty won the Construction News Health Safety and Wellbeing Excellence (company) Award.
Industry experts
Ms Bryant will be joined at the 21 November conference by a range of other safety experts from within the waste industry.
The dangers posed by kerbside vehicles will be discussed by David Thomas from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), whilst a case study on developing health and safety culture will be provided by Steve Holmes of Pennon Group PLC
The event is organised by letsrecycle.com and takes place at Stamford Court in Leicester. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear about the latest work taking place to improve waste and recycling’s health and safety – from preventing sleepers in bins to handling hazardous lithium batteries and mitigating the risks of working machinery.
Practical guidance
Chris Jones from the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) forum will also offer an overview of the work his industry group has undertaken and a practical guidance session will look at dealing with the public at civic amenity sites.
