Piddington stands in as Burrows Smith departs Viridor

Viridor chief operating officer for energy Phillip Piddington has temporarily assumed responsibility of Mark Burrows Smith’s duties in the wake of his departure from the waste firm.

Mr Burrows Smith, who was appointed chief operating officer at Viridor in 2011, has announced he is stepping down from the firm to become chief executive of Irish waste company Greenstar.

He previously served as the firm’s northern regional director, South East regional director, and managing director of trading arm Viridor Resource Management (see letsrecycle.com story).

Mr Burrows Smith’s time at Viridor has seen him oversee the expansion of the company, including a significant role as bid manager for the firm’s multi-billion pound Greater Manchester PFI waste contract. Mr Burrows Smith also led several acquisitions including Adapt Recycling, Waste Management Ltd and Swinnerton Environmental.

Speaking to letsrecycle.com, a spokesperson for Viridor said a replacement for Mr Burrows Smith was yet to be confirmed, but that Phillip Piddington – the company’s chief operating officer for energy – would oversee the role in the interim.

Greenstar

Mr Burrows Smith’s new role at Greenstar will seem him in charge of providing waste and recycling collections for around 80,000 households in Ireland.

The firm emerged from receivership in March 2014. It also currently holds around ‘25%’ of the commercial and industrial waste market in Ireland and acquired competitor Wastepal in October last year.

Relocating to Dublin in July, Mr Burrows Smith will replace current Greenstar chief executive Mark Keough, who is to step down from day to day management of the business.

Mr Keough, who is a co-investor in Greenstar and an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management LP, will remain as deputy chairman and on the board of directors.

A Greenstar spokesperson said: “Mark Burrows Smith brings to Greenstar an enormous breadth of knowledge and experience of all aspects of the waste management business.”
