A member of the group dressed up as communities secretary Eric Pickles and posed in a wheeled bin to mark Mr Pickles being voted the winner of the Talking Rubbish award by visitors to the Friends of the Earth website.
The vote was held to highlight what the group claims is the governments failure to set out a sensible plan for dealing with Englands waste but instead criticising councils actions on recycling. More than 1,000 people voted in the poll.
Friends of the Earth claimed Mr Pickles had made over-hyped claims that householders were terrified of the bin police. The group also criticised local government minister, Bob Neill, who it said had claimed rotting food was piling up in homes.
And, it criticised environment secretary Caroline Spelman for her claims that tyrannical bin taxes were being scrapped by the government. According to Friends of the Earth, all three ministers declined to attend this mornings awards ceremony.
Councils
Commenting on the event, Friends of the Earths waste campaigner, Julian Kirby, said: Government Ministers have been keen to trash recycling when in reality it’s more popular and successful than ever.
“Eric Pickles in particular has been at war with councils when he should be supporting them to cut the amount we needlessly throw away.
He added: “David Cameron needs to take control of his hysterical, squabbling Ministers and set a goal to halve the nation’s black bag waste by 2020.”
The team also criticized regional government minister, Bob Neill, who it said had said warping food was piling up in houses.
