Early exchanges in the final proved to be tense, as both sides were eager to break the deadlock early on, and PHSs Ian Croft brought out a fine save from Wybones keeper with the best chance of the half after a fierce drive from just outside the area.

The second half saw PHS, in red, come out strongly with Grant Thetford scoring from a neat strike on the left of the area. But, with just two minutes to go, Wybones John Smiths shot just went past the keepers hands to bring the scores level.
Five minutes of extra time followed with the golden goal rule in force. And, the golden touch came with just 20 seconds to go, with Grant Thetford again providing finishing touch to clinch victory for the tournament newcomers.
Speaking after the final whistle, an elated Simon Garrod, captain of the victorious PHS Wastetech team, said: With this being our first tournament, we thought the day was run fantastically. The matches were all very competitive and we are really pleased to have won.
Tournament
Teams from across the waste sector took part in the one-day, mixed gender, six a-side football tournament, with Viridor fielding two squads, alongside teams from ECO Plastics, Veolia ES, Palm Recycling, Eunomia, Singleton Birch, The Greenhouse, Wandsworth Council, letsrecycle.com, FCC Environment, MITIE, DHL Envirosolutions, Grundon, WEEE Environmental and the ESA.
Paul Gorin, commercial director of sponsor Smart Solutions also praised the standard of football on show, addressing teams after the tournament he said: It has been a thoroughly enjoyable day and I have been very impressed with the quality of the football. I feel sorry for some of the ladies who didnt have as much of a rest as some of the men!
WEEE Warriors, representing Northamptonshire-based WEEE recyclers WEEE Environmental ran out comfortable winners in the second edition of the plate competition, which sees group runners up face off against each other, winning their matches 3-1 and 4-0.
In the Wheelie Bin Challenge, sponsored by Taylors, Ben Torn of Singleton Birch proved to have the most accurate feet, slotting home two balls from distance to go home with the 100 prize. The Crossbar Challenge, sponsored by CIWM , was won by Jason Burnham of Viridor, who also took home a 100 prize.
Challenge
This years tournament was sponsored by Smart Solutions and organised by letsrecycle.com with charity donations going to POD Charitable Trust, which sends entertainers into hospital to entertain children.
Letsrecycle.com editor Steve Eminton, said: “I would like to say well done to all the teams who took part in this year’s Waste World Cup, on what turned out to be a gloriously sunny day. I would also like to say thanks to Northampton University for letting us have the use of their pitches again.”
Players and spectators were treated to a display of football and basketball tricks from Ash A-R Randall and Tom Conman Connors of urban sports performance team SBX. The pair hold a total of six world records.
Balls for the event were supplied by Clydesdale Bank from its sponsored-stock for the Scottish Premier League. The event was hosted on the playing fields at the University of Northamptons Park Road campus. The university runs a number of academic courses relevant to the waste management and recycling sector.
