Chief executive appointed to Green Investment Bank

Shaun Kingsbury has been appointed as the chief executive. He joins the UK GIB from the private equity firm Hudson Clean Energy Partners where he was responsible for its European activities. He will work alongside the chair Lord Smith of Kelvin and deputy chair Sir Adrian Montague who were appointed by Vince Cable in May 2012.

Six other non-executive directors have also been appointed. They are: Professor Dame Julia King; Fred Maroudas; Tom Murley; David Nish; Isobel Sharp; and, Tessa Tennant. Their backgrounds include universities, investment funds, business and the low carbon sector. The chief executive and non-executive directors will take up their posts in late October.

Mr Cable said: I am delighted that we have been able to appoint people of such high calibre to the Board of the UK Green Investment Bank. I have every confidence that the team will build on the good progress already made, leading the Bank into full operation and developing a truly ground breaking institution.

SITA appoints head of dry recycling

SITA UK has appointed plastics expert Jonathan Donohue as its new head of dry recycling to oversee the development of its dry recyclables trading department.

His team will also be focusing on the development of new and existing markets for recyclables, as well as investigating the sales potential of further refining processed materials. Mr Donohue previously worked as commercial manager for Biffa Polymers. He brings with him years of experience in plastics recycling, as well as the wider plastics industry following 11 years working in the UK and abroad with Total Petrochemicals.

Mr Donohue said: Having spent my career selling and marketing various polymer grades to a number of industries, SITA UK provides a great opportunity to identify and develop new applications for recovered products, ensuring that valuable resources are recycled appropriately and as often as is possible.

J & B Recycling recruits production manager

Teesside-based waste management firm J & B Recycling has recruited production manager Mick Proud as it looks to expand its operations.

Within J & B Recycling, Mr Prouds role will focus on finding ways the company can improve its procedures and maximise returns from waste materials. He joins the company after more than 20 years working to increase efficiency across several industry sectors, including similar roles at Expamet Building Products and Peart Fencing.

Mr Proud said: J & B wants to look at increasing efficiencies across all of its operations and have brought me in to see where we can make things more productive. Its a job that really excites me because this is clearly a business that wants to progress and develop into new service areas, not just in the recycling of general waste but looking at other waste streams and how additional revenue can be gained from that.

Hills Waste Solutions makes key appointments

Swindon-based Hills Waste Solutions has made three appointments to its operations team.

Ed Dodd has been promoted to divisional director of waste operations, meaning he has overall responsibility for landfill operations and sales, waste management and the 20 million Northacre Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) in Wiltshire. Meanwhile Simon Collins has been promoted to field sales/accounts manager and will be responsible for managing waste collection accounts, the field sales team and sales administration staff.

Hills has also appointed Simon Thomas as plant manager for the Northacre RRC. The facility in Westbury is currently under construction, but once complete will process 60,000 tonnes of household waste a year using mechanical biological treatment in a contract agreed with Wiltshire council.

Lord Deben made chair of climate change committee

The Rt Hon Lord Deben PC has been confirmed as Chair of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), as approved by Energy Secretary Ed Davey.

As chair, Lord Deben will be responsible for steering and developing the overall work of the CCC, which advises the UK Government on setting and meeting carbon budgets and on preparing for the impacts of climate change. He will succeed Lord Adair Turner who stepped down earlier this year to focus on his role as Chair of the Financial Services Authority.

Lord Deben said: This appointment is a great honour. I look forward to building upon the solid foundations that Adair Turner has laid. I am determined that the Committee on Climate Change will remain firmly independent, giving impartial, scientifically well-founded advice to the UK Government and devolved administrations.

New business development manager for Newport Paper

Newport Paper, a specialist purchaser and recycler of recovered materials, has announced that Nick Franks has joined the company as business development manager.

In this new role Mr Franks will seek and develop new markets in China and the rest of the Far East including Asia and India. In addition, he will help increase sales to existing European outlets. Nick has over 15 years experience in the waste industry including companies such as Jack Serfaty Partnership, APG Atlantic Paper Ltd and Viridor. He has gained expertise in developing sustainable outlets for both traditional grades and the new grades generated from the UK’s growing number of MRFs.

Matthew Hoare, managing director of Newport Paper, said: Were really pleased to have recruited someone of such calibre into this new and challenging role as our new business development Manager. His wealth of knowledge and industry experience will complement the existing team and will help to develop Newport Paper as one of the largest independent recyclers in the UK.

Envac appoints UK managing director

Underground vacuum waste management specialist, Envac, has appointed engineering industry expert Mike Merriman to head up its UK office.

Mr Merriman will be responsible for establishing new UK contracts and building on the success of Wembley City. He joins the UK office after six years as director of sales and marketing with Envac UAE.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Merriman said: Whilst the UK and UAE markets are very different, one thing that remains the same is Envacs quality of service and its commitment to providing a contemporary and more sustainable alternative to traditional waste collection. The UK office currently has a number of projects on the horizon and I look forward to taking these forward over the next 12 months and playing a role in Envac UKs ambitious expansion plans.
