Partnership launches compact DRS return option for small retailers

A partnership has been announced between Smiths News Recycle and CMB RVM Solutions to offer a smaller reverse vending machine (RVM) option ahead of the UK’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) being introduced.

Under the scheme, due to launch in October 2027, all retailers selling drinks in PET plastic bottles or aluminium cans will be required to host a return point for eligible containers.

While larger supermarkets are expected to install full RVMs, the requirement poses a more complex challenge for smaller convenience stores, where space is limited and return volumes may be comparatively low.

To address this issue, the two companies have collaborated to develop a compact, self-service solution – the CMB RVM Smart Lite. Designed specifically with smaller retail environments in mind, the unit aims to provide a practical alternative to traditional RVMs while remaining compliant with DRS requirements.

Smaller-scale RVMs

The Smart Lite allows customers to return containers independently, reducing the need for staff involvement and minimising disruption to day-to-day store operations.

It is also positioned as a lower-cost option compared to full-scale machines, helping to make participation in the scheme more financially viable for independent retailers.

Commenting on the partnership, Adam Wylie, Managing Director of Smiths News Recycle, said: “We’re delighted to announce our partnership with CMB RVM Solutions for the distribution of CMB RVM Smart Lite.

“Our organisations share closely aligned values and a long, successful business heritage.

“From the outset, the CMB RVM Solutions team impressed us with their technical expertise, reliability, and deep understanding of DRS.

“We’re proud that the smart bins will be manufactured in the UK, and we’re excited to deliver this solution together.”

‘Make DRS a success’

CMB RVM Solutions is a part of CarnaudMetalbox Engineering (CMbE).

Andrew Truelove, CMbE, added: “This partnership brings together the strengths of both organisations – our precision engineering and manufacturing expertise, combined with Smiths News Recycle’s deep understanding of the retail sector.

“They know what smaller stores need for DRS to work effectively. We’re delighted to be working together to make DRS a success by ensuring it is accessible and practical for as many retailers as possible.”
