Parliamentary body notes gap in advice over recycling and efw

A 137% increase in energy from waste capacity in the UK is either under construction or planned according to the Energy from Waste Association.

Current operating capacity (including upgrading of plants) is 2.7 million tonnes with more than 2 million tonnes under construction or planned under a firm contract subject to planning permissions.

The data is contained in a report by The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology on energy from waste in the UK.

The study gives a useful summary of efw policy and notes there is concern about a lack of government guidance on how waste planning authorities can prove that options higher in the waste hierarchy (such as recycling) have been exhausted before incineration is adopted.

The Office of Science and Technology is an office of the Houses of Parliament, and is charged with providing “balanced and objective analysis of science and technology based issues of relevance to Parliament”.

The report can be seen in the publications section of Office of Science and Technology
