Data from the CPI shows a half yearly RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) injury rate for June 2006 down on comparable figures for 2005.
While there was a 4% reduction in smaller injuries, the major incidence rate also fell from 289 per 100,000 employees to 200, a 31% fall.
Slipping, tripping and falling remain the most common types of accidents in the industry.
Encouraged
CPI Recovered Paper Sector Body manager, Peter Seggie said: “The Sector Body is encouraged by the improvements displayed to date but realises it has a long way to go before it achieves the manufacturing industry average.
“CPI members have demonstrated a huge commitment and drive for improved health and safety standards, and this is reflected in the progress made so far. The waste industry rightly continues to be the focus of HSE attention given the incidence rates reported in their statistics.”
He added: “The Recovered Paper Sector works closely with the Independent Waste Paper Processors Association and HSE through its Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee and has agreed robust targets within the Making a Difference strategy to 2008. HSE has been supportive throughout the PABIAC process and worked in partnership with CPI in driving improvement to its members.”
CPI represents papermakers, tissue manufacturers, corrugated packaging producers, and recovered paper merchants and exporters.
