The company won the contract for an integrated strategy including waste collection, recycling and street cleaning. It also plans to expand existing doorstep collections and recycling facilities on housing estates.
Commitment
Camden Borough Council's executive member for the environment, Councillor John Thane, said: “In awarding this contract, we are underlining once again our commitment to making Camden a cleaner and greener place.
“People in Camden have consistently told us that clean streets and efficient waste collection are one of the things they want most, and we want to make sure they get them.”
Michel Gourvennec, chief executive of Onyx, commented: “We are delighted to have won this contract. Our experience with other London boroughs will be very beneficial in implementing a programme that works best for the residents of Camden.”
Westminster
The news follows the announcement of Westminster City Council's decision earlier this week to renew its municipal waste collection contract with the waste management company (see letsrecycle.com story).
The Camden waste contract will begin in April 2003. Camden has a population of 193,800 – about medium for a London borough. It has a recycling rate of 15%, but in order to meet government targets, must raise this to 33% by 2006.
