The emergency services were called to the Bury Lane site in Marchwood at 21.14 on Saturday evening and were dealing with the fire until Sunday afternoon.

A warning was sent out to local residents recommending that they stay inside and shut all doors and windows. The fire brigade said that the warning was circulated as they were not aware what was in the site.

said: “There was plastic in the site which does not smell good when burning. We were unaware if there was anything hazardous in the site so alerted the residents as a precautionary measure.”

The Fire Brigade told letsrecycle.com afterwards that the site was cleared and that no hazardous material was found.
The heavy smoke that caused concern amongst the emergency services was dealt with by Sunday morning, according to the fire brigade.
Around 40 fire fighters were called to the site from Totton, Hyde, Redbridge and an aerial ladder platform which was brought in from Dorset.
A spokesman for Onyx said: “The bunker where the fire took hold was used for household bulky and collected waste. Precautionary advice was issued to Marchwood residents on Sunday morning advising them to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed due to the risk of fume inhalation, primarily if there were foam and plastics involved.
“The cause of the weekend fire is still being investigated, and the facility will remain out of action while these investigations are underway. Assessors are on site today assessing the condition of the building and facility. Our Project Integra partners are using alternative sites, so there is no impact on the normal domestic collection service for waste and recyclables,” he added.
