The company, which has signed a 30-year contract with the City Council, has pledged to triple Sheffield’s current levels of recycling to meet government targets. By 2005, it aims to have increased recycling from six to 18%. Sheffield City Council will remain in control of the standard of service delivery throughout the life of the 30-year contract.
Onyx has taken on former council staff, with no compulsory redundancies, and expects new jobs to be created with the development of recycling operations.
Plans under the contract include:
- the construction of a state-of-the-art material recycling facility at an existing Onyx site in Beighton, which should be up and running by early 2004.
- The enhancement and development of the Bring Bank Scheme and civic amenity sites.
- A significant increase in kerbside collections of recyclable materials.
- The development of a modern, efficient Energy from Waste facility and office accommodation at the company’s Bernard Road site.
