The agreement sees Onyx’s existing contract with Trafford upgraded to include a recycling element. Trafford currently recycles 7.5% of its waste but government targets require it to reach 19.8% by 2006 and 30% by 2011 when a three year extension to the contract may be offered.
Commenting on the new contract, Onyx chief executive, Cyrille du Peloux, said: “This really is great news we are very pleased that the partnership with Trafford Council will continue and are looking forward to introducing a wide range of recycling services for residents.”
Serving 93,000 households, the contract covers the collection of domestic, trade and clinical waste and bulky household waste items as well as dry recyclables, green garden waste and glass.
Onyx will be collecting paper in sacks and dry recyclables in a recycling box both fortnightly. Green waste will be collected in wheeled bins, also on a fortnightly basis. Onyx has also brought on board Emerge, a local enterprise group, who will be providing a collection service for around 8,000 properties using boxes and sacks. Initially residual waste will be collected weekly but in an attempt to reach the 2011 targets Onyx will be bringing in an alternate weekly collection system.
Dr. Gary Pickering, interim chief executive for Trafford metropolitan borough council, said: “Onyx were selected as the council’s chosen contractor following a rigorous evaluation exercise, which assessed the quality and price of all tenders received on a 50:50 split. The council is therefore delighted to award the contract to Onyx and looks forward to entering into a partnering arrangement with the company that will provide waste and recycling services within Trafford, at the same time enabling the council to meet its statutory recycling targets.”
The system of collection has been based on the scheme currently being introduced by Onyx as part of its Charnwood district council contract in Leicestershire. The collected recyclables will be delivered to local waste disposal authority sites for bulking and onward transportation to material processors.
Bournemouth
Onyx have also been awarded a new two-year contract with Bournemouth borough council to provide disposal and composting services.
Around 8,000 tonnes of compost per annum will be taken from the Milhams civic amenity site, which covers around 160,000 residents. Onyx will also be taking around 80,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per annum to the Onyx Chatsworth Blue Haze landfill in Ringwood.
