The service is being provided in partnership with
Leeds-based electronics recycling specialist Silver
Lining Ltd, and is being offered to any commercial
generator of WEEE in the UK or in Ireland.
Key to the new service will be the ability for waste
producers to request collections through the Onyx
website or by calling a new telephone hotline. Onyx is
aiming to provide collections within 72 hours of a
request, and is offering repeat collections at any
frequency from weekly to once a year.
The company is offering two types of collection for customers of its new service, a “Box and Go” service for the
collection of large WEEE such as computer equipment,
and a “Tubecare” service specifically for fluorescent
lighting tubes and lamps.
Under each option, Onyx will deliver the required
waste containers, and will collect when requested for
sorting at the company’s Leeds sorting centre before
materials are sent for recycling to Silver Lining.
Using the service will allow commercial waste
producers to meet the demands of the European WEEE
Directive. The Directive will require all commercial
waste electronics to be collected and recovered to its recycling standards from August 2005.

Announcing the new service, Onyx’s chief executive,
Cyrille du Peloux, said: “With these pressing
regulations, it is important that we can offer our
customers this new service to help them comply with
the shift towards producer responsibility and duty of
care.”
The decision by Onyx to provide a WEEE collection and
recycling service comes as a number of waste
management firms are setting up arrangements before
the August 2005 deadline.
Biffa Waste Services joined forces with the
reprocessor European Metal Recycling for a WEEE
recycling partnership called Transform last year (see

And, in September this year waste management firm
Grundon teamed up with recycler Sims UK and WEEE
refurbisher Remploy to provide a service under the
banner of the Revive Group (see
letsrecycle.com story).
