Onyx invests 1m in Portsmouth recycling facility

Onyx has invested one million pounds in an expansion of a materials recovery facility (MRF) at Portsmouth, after the site reached its full capacity in five years of operation.

Mike Thomas, recycling Manager at Onyx Environmental Group in Hampshire, said: “We are currently recycling approximately 22% of the 852,000 tonnes of the waste produced by us all during the course of a year.”

Since it opened in 1998, the MRF has processed 271,000 tonnes of dry recyclable material – plastic bottles, paper, cans and card – collected from Hampshire's doorsteps or via the network or Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

The expansion is part of Onxy's ongoing investment in Hampshire's waste infrastructure under Project Integra – a partnership with the county's 14 local authorities. “The expansion of the MRF's capacity was a vital part in the strategy to meet the growing demand for recycling in the country,” explained Mr Thomas.

A second MRF is currently under construction at Alton and together with the Portsmouth site, this could mean a massive 157,000 tonnes of recyclables would be processed each year in Hampshire.

The investment programme will increase the MRF's capacity to sort and separate recyclables. A new state-of-the-art Trommel, which acts as a front line filter at the plant, separating metal cans from paper, has been completed which means materials can be separated more easily.
