Obituary: Robin Strickland, formerly of Smurfit Kappa

Former paper recycler Robin Strickland, who worked with Edwin Butterworth and Smurfit Kappa, passed away at home on 27 March.

Robin spent his whole working life in the paper recycling sector, beginning with Edwin Butterworth of Pollard Street, Manchester, in 1961 and retiring from Smurfit Kappa in 2011.

He died after “a brief but valiant final battle with a brain tumour”.

Paper recycling was his passion, and those close to him say that what he did not know about waste paper “wasn’t worth knowing”.

Loved for his loyalty, he will also be remembered for his friendly humour, often peppering his speech with axioms and phrases such as “I love it when the plan comes together”, delivered with a strong Lancashire accent.

He is survived by his wife Vivien, for whom he cared when she became disabled, his daughter Rebecca, and son Jonathan and his family.

His funeral will be held at Hollygate Memorial Woodlands on the edge of Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire, at 2pm on 13 April.
