Notts crews tackle Newark scrapyard fire

Fire crews from across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire are currently dealing with a large industrial fire on Great North Road in Newark, reportedly involving 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

Fire services were called to the Briggs Metals Limited site shortly before 11.51am this morning (17 April).

According to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, a number of specialist appliances including a high-volume pump, a water bowser and one of the service’s aerial ladder platforms are in use at the scene.

Firefighters are continuing to work alongside partner agencies while the incident remains ongoing, a statement by the fire service says.

Area manager for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, Mick Sharman, incident commander at the scene, and said: “We have 12 fire engines dealing with the fire at present, and I would like to thank our neighbouring fire and rescue services for their assistance.

“The A616 Great North Road is currently closed, and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.”

Nottinghamshire Police, The Environment Agency, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Public Health England are also understood to be in attendance.

‘Major fire’

In a social media post, the Environment Agency said it was working with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue to minimise the impact on the environment of the “major fire”.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson, said: “We are liaising with the council and other emergency services and our emergency planning team is aware of the incident.”

A Public Health England East Midlands spokesperson has advised residents in the area to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and the other agencies involved will continue to monitor the situation and issue advice, the spokesperson added.

East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it sent a hazardous area response team to a fire at a commercial property in Great North Road, Newark. The team remains on scene.

Briggs Metals Limited

Briggs Metals Limited is a member of the British Metals Recycling Association. According to BMRA, the company handles a range of metals and materials including vehicle engine catalysts, WEEE, SWARF and batteries. It offers baling and shredding services.

When contacted by letsrecycle.com, Briggs Metals Limited was unavailable for comment.
