Nottingham University hospitals grant Mitie medical waste contract

Facilities management company Mitie has been granted a new waste contract from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust – focused on medical waste management services.

Mitie will be responsible for the collection and management of all healthcare related waste produced by the Trust, including hospital gowns, gloves, testing kits and other single-use plastics.

The contract will run for an initial three years with the option to extend for a further two.

Mitie’s process for managing medical waste

The company said it hopes that the use of its autoclave equipment will prove more sustainable than traditional high temperature incineration processes which do not allow for further recycling.

The equipment utilises high pressure steam to destroy bacteria and pathogens. The process can treat up to 1.8 tonnes of infectious waste – like sharp syringes, swabs and dressings – every 45 minutes.

Delivered through its specialist clinical waste business, Cliniwaste, Mitie said that it plans to work with partners across the UK to recycle and repurpose waste where possible.

Mitie currently delivers waste management services at several other NHS hospitals, including St George’s in South London and Hull University Teaching Hospitals.

Michael Taylor, managing director at Mitie, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver waste management solutions at Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital.

“This contract not only demonstrates our approach to innovative waste treatment, but also our commitment to supporting the NHS in achieving its sustainability targets.

“Through our expert Cliniwaste team and our advanced autoclave technology, we can ensure that all clinical waste across the Trust is managed efficiently and responsibly, contributing to a greener future for healthcare.”

Lorraine Horsley, estates and facilities business and assurance manager at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, added: “We are looking forward to working with Mitie to support and drive a sustained and positive reduction to our Trusts carbon emissions. This partnership will take us one step closer to delivering the NHS Net Zero targets.”
