Northern Ireland councils team up for waste planning

A total of 11 local authorities in the eastern part of Northern Ireland, known collectively as arc21, are producing a strategy to improve the way waste is handled and to increase recycling rates.

Initial plans are underway and arc21 has appointed EnvirosAspinwall as its waste management consultant to assist in completing a plan and strategy by the autumn of 2001.

The eastern region represents 25% of Northern Ireland with about 57% of its population and currently handles 500,000 tonnes of municipal waste each year. This represents about half of Northern Ireland’s annual municipal waste arisings.

arc21 has recently completed a series of public meetings culminating in a debate in the Town Hall in Bangor.

Jackie Snodden, director of amenities and technical services at North Down Borough Council and a member of arc21, said of the meetings: “We need the public to get involved at this early stage and submit any and all ideas, suggestions or concerns they have.

“arc21 will be considering every possible avenue in developing the strategy which is designed to meet challenging targets for waste diversion for the next 20 to 25 years. arc21 must ensure the plans they put in place enable every household in the region, by the year 2005, to recycle one quarter of the waste it produces. Considering we as a region, only recycle or recover 6% of our household waste at the movement, we need to make a contribution now.”
