Nordic Recycling paper yard suffers fire

Fire fighters were monitoring the latter stages of a fire at Nordic Recycling's paper recycling yard in Kent yesterday.

The Kent Fire Service was called out at 11.45am on Wednesday to deal with the incident, which involved 1,700 tonnes of paper at Nordic's Chatham Dock site, near Gillingham.

The fire is now under control, but fire fighters have allowed remaining paper to burn under their supervision. Officers said there were no suspicious circumstances involved in the outbreak.

A spokeswoman for Kent fire and rescue service told letsrecycle.com: “After consulting with site management officers are allowing the paper to burn under controlled conditions.

“This is to save on water and resources. Officers are on site monitoring the situation and keeping the public safe,” she explained.

Five fire engines, specialist vehicles and support pumps were required to deal with the blaze at its fullest. The spokeswoman said that now damping down had begun on certain areas of the facility, proceedings were coming to a close.

Nordic Recycling refused to comment on the fire.

The company was hit by another fire in July last year, when the Royal Navy was called in to help tackle a blaze involving 2,000 tonnes of paper, with HMS Leeds Castle sent to assist fire fighters (see letsrecycle.com story).

The company exports materials to Europe, Scandinavia and the Far East and the site usually processes around 6,000 tonnes of paper each week.
