‘No impact’ on NWH services after second fire at Glasgow plant

The NWH Group has enacted “emergency measures” to ensure service delivery for its customers remains “unchanged”, after a second fire at its Glasgow facility.

Fire Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at the site at around 5.08pm on 6 June and remained on site yesterday. Crews left the scene yesterday afternoon.

Grey smoke was seen from the scene, as reported by George Alison below.

The fire service said that it had to implement safety measures after the fire at the site on Nuneaton Street, including road closures. The incident was the second fire at the plant this year, after an incident in February (see letsrecycle story).

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 5.08pm on Tuesday, 6 June to a fire within the grounds of a recycling centre on Nuneaton Street, Glasgow. “Operations Control mobilised seven appliances and a specialist resource to scene to fight the blaze.”

Police Scotland also confirmed that it was in attendance at the incident assisting with traffic management, and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency also attended the scene, as outlined below.

Measures

The NWH Group offers a range of waste management services and serves the whole of Scotland and Northeast England from ten sites.

Ricky Ray, compliance director at the NWH Group, said in a statement yesterday: “We are currently working with the fire service at our Glasgow site to understand the cause of a fire that originated outdoors yesterday afternoon.

“The fire has been contained, there have been no injuries, and our emergency plans are in place so there is no impact on our service delivery for customers. The Glasgow site is currently closed to third-party tipping.”
