HW Martin boosts recycling with Mercedes-Benz
HW Martin Waste Ltd has achieved higher recycling rates after drafting five Mercedes-Benz Econic refuse trucks into service for local authorities in Derbyshire.

The Alfreton-based specialist is responsible, under a seven year contract, for providing the authorities with a fully managed service covering the collection, sorting and recycling of all waste. Supplied by East Midlands dealer Mertrux, the trucks are 6×2 Econic 2629LL models with mid-steer axles for optimum load distribution and ride quality. Power for the new 26-tonners comes from 290hp engines that meet the Euro 5 emissions limit and also the more demanding and voluntary EEV standard. The Econic also features a user-friendly Allison six-speed automatic transmission while full air suspension front and rear makes for very quiet operation, which is of benefit when working in urban areas. The trucks 70:30 split Heil Twintrack compactor bodies offer high, 22m3 volume capacities to reflect the fact that much of the waste carried is light but bulky. They are fitted with triple Terberg Omnidel bin lifts.
The Econics are now serving more than 79,000 properties, after the local authorities decided to introduce new materials to their collections with the aim of increasing recycling rates. Residents have been supplied with 240-litre wheeled bins which have main compartments for collecting dry recyclables such as cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, aerosols and cans, and 40-litre inner caddies for paper.
We have been delighted by the way that recycling material tonnage has shot up since the new system was introduced, said Phil Darwin, northern area operations manager for HW Martin Waste. In the first few weeks of operation we saw a 170 per cent increase on one particularly challenging round, while the average across the whole project shows a 90 per cent jump in recyclable tonnage. We are now moving 70 per cent more material with fewer vehicles.
Peak Waste Recycling buy Liebherr Industrial Rehandler
Derbyshire-based recycling company Peak Waste Recycling has invested in an A 316 Litronic wheeled materials handler produced by Liebherr.

The machine featuresa hydraulically elevating cab, a 3.5 metres stick with tilt kinematics and a 5.5 metres industrial straight boom for maximum lift height and long reach capabilities. Peak Waste Recyclings machine is also equipped for both grapple and shear, with Liebherr Tool Control for automatic recognition of attachment, adjusting hydraulic flow accordingly; it is also equipped with hydraulic swivel for full 360 rotation of the selected attachment. For operational stability, the A 316 is equipped with front and rear hydraulic outriggers and, when free-on-wheels, the mobility and agility of this machine provides excellent manoeuvrability around the site. The solid twin tyres selected are Gumasol 10.00-20/SP20 (MH 4). The A316 Litronic is an 18 tonnes class machine and the level IIIA/Tier 3 engine output is 94kW, providing power to spare. Lift capacities are up to 11 tonnes, with a maximum reach and lift height of nine metres. The air-conditioned operators cab is typically comfortable and functional, with Liebherrs Litronic engine, hydraulic and electronics management system and lift charts. The A 316 Litronic is already busy loading high-sided bulkers, stockpiling and feeding the recycling plants on site.
Peak Wastes director Ken Martin said: Recommendations from colleagues in the industry helped us decide to go with Liebherr this time and Im pleased to say we are very satisfied with the power and performance of our new materials handler.
JCB Teletruk saves WasteCare 40 minutes per trailer
By using a JCB Teletruk telescopic lift truck instead of a traditional counterbalance forklift, specialist WEEE recycling company WasteCare says it is saving 40 minutes on each trailer at its Leeds headquarters. An average 15 to 18 trailers arrive for unloading and cross re-loading each day.

This means a theoretical 10 -12 hours is saved each day. In practice the time saved is absorbed by a greater HGV throughput without the need to increase the size of the site. WasteCare estimates it is achieving a 40 % increase in site capacity. The recycling and waste management company which offers a specialist WEEE recycling service – acquired ten JCB TLT 25D Teletruks in June 2010 for use across its network of depots. Four of these 2.5 tonne diesel Teletruks have replaced seven traditional, masted counterbalance forklifts at WasteCares busy Leeds headquarters.
Yard Manager John Kell: Working with JCB Teletruks is faster and safer. The JCBs have changed the way we work. We used to work with long fork extenders which are cumbersome and awkward to use especially with double deck trailers because you cant see onto the top deck. With fork extenders it took two men and two forklifts to tip a 40 foot trailer. Now it is one man, one forklift.
