Royal opening for 22 million JCB Academy

The Royal couple visited the site, at Rocester in Staffordshire, and were shown around the development. The project is the first school of its kind in the UK for the education of 14 to 19-year-olds with a core focus on engineering, and is designed to produce the engineers and business leaders of the future. The first 170 students began their studies in September 2010 and the Academy is eventually expected to house 540 students from Staffordshire and Derbyshire. While the Academy is funded by the Department for education, as main sponsor JCB contributed 10% of the capital and donated the mill in which the school is based.

JCB Academy Principal Jim Wade said: The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall showed an immense interest in every aspect of The JCB Academy as they toured our facility and it was wonderful to host them and give them an insight into our work. Everyone has had a fantastic time.

Dennis Eagle wins Northumberland collection vehicle deal

Warwick-based refuse collection vehicle manufacturer Dennis Eagle has won a contract to supply Northumberland county council with 48 new vehicles over the next four years.

The 24 tonne 6×2 vehicles, which will operate throughout the county to carry out both residual waste and recycling collections, feature mid lift narrow Elite 2 cabs coupled with Olympus 16 narrow bodies and Terberg OmniDEL bin lifts. They have been purchased to reflect the fact that the council recently became a unitary authority, a move which involved the county council merging with six district and borough councils, meaning the fleet must now cover a diverse mix of rural and built-up areas.

Brian Jones, from Northumberland county council, said: The narrow vehicles offered an ideal solution as they can cope with both winding country lanes and narrow urban streets while offering exceptional payload efficiency. The first 12 vehicles under the contract have been delivered, to be followed by 19 later this year and a further seven in 2012.

Metal recycling giant European Metal Recycling (EMR) has launched new livery, which aims to reflect its move towards a more modern corporate identity and maximise the use of advertising space on its fleet, on 22 newly-purchased Volvo trucks.

The trucks, which were supplied by Manchester-based Thomas Hardie Commercials, include 14 Globetrotter-cabbed FH-460s as well as seven FM 8x4s equipped with Edbro Hookloader bodies and one FL 4×2 skiploader which will be joining the companys 300-strong fleet at depots around the UK including Bellshill, Sharpness and Tilbury. Also, for the first time among the 80-plus Volvos in the EMR fleet, the FMs feature the payload friendly D11C litre engine rated at 370 HP.

The new livery depicts the blue EMR logo in bold lower case letters on the Volvo FHs cab doors and front panel below the windscreen, while, for the first time, the cabs of the new trucks are white and the typeface of the logo is set off by a green ellipse. Commenting on the change, EMRs transport manager, Craig Fisher, said: The move away from the long standing blue livery has been well received.

Trailer manufacturer choose Edbro tipping hoists

The UKs largest trailer manufacturer, SDC, has chosen tipping gear developed by hydraulic hoist and waste equipment company Edbro to use in its latest, fuel-efficient, smoothside tipper design.

SDCs new generation of smoothsiders employ Edbros CS series of tipping hoists as part of an optimised weight saving design. The construction of the smoothsiders comprises what Edbro termed an innovative sloping chassis, to aid load removal, plus, a new wider design of light weight aluminium extruded side panels. These are used to construct the smooth sides of the panel tipper, with the aim of making them easier to clean, providing a better mounting surface for decals, reducing drag and improving fuel efficiency.

Edbros CS series complements our latest generation of smooth sided tippers perfectly, said Matt Kerrison, area sales manager for SDC. We chose Edbro as a preference for tipping gear for a number of major reasons. First, Edbro products are manufactured in the UK, and are available on short lead times. Second, they dont go wrong, providing the extended reliability that is crucial in the field. Third, the light weight design fits particularly well with our fuel-saving aluminium smooth sided tipper design.

CO2Sense funds vehicle for Leeds recycling venture

The new split compartment vehicle which is allowing Forge Recycling to reduce the cost of waste collections for businesses in Yorkshire
A 20,000 investment by Yorkshire business development agency CO2Sense has enabled Leeds-based business waste and recycling company Forge Recycling to buy a new collection vehicle. It is hoped the vehicle will help to reduce food waste in the region.

The split compartment nature of the vehicle means it can collect food waste and general waste separately, making it easier to sort and recycle the general waste, while the food waste is sent for in-vessel composting to produce a fertiliser for sale. CO2Sense claims the approach is cheaper for businesses because it means all their waste is collected at once, up to 90% of it is diverted from landfill and they pay the same or less than sending it to landfill.

The purchase represents Forge Recyclings first split-compartment vehicle and Harvey Mills, from Forge Recycling, said: We are very excited to be able to offer this service to our customers, and to be able to recover such a large portion of the waste we collect. We want to expand our collection to include the York and Harrogate areas, so we will be able to offer this service to businesses across a large part of Yorkshire.
