News in Brief Vehicles and Plant

Randall Fabrications has supplied compaction units and compaction containers to two hospital sites in LiverpoolRandalls Fabrications – a member of the Skips Unit Group – has supplied four Simpak 1500 waste compactors at the two sites of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Four waste compactors supplied to Liverpool hospitals

The decision to install the compactors comes in the wake of the hospitals' management opting to rationalise waste collection systems at the two sites. This led to the installation of waste compactors and dedicated waste transfer stations. Two Simpak 1500 compactors and two compaction containers have been installed at each of the sites, with compacting cardboard for recycling and the other compacting residual waste for disposal. Once full, the compactors are emptied by Liverpool city council's waste contractor Enterprise.

Since installing the compaction units, Randalls said it has managed to cut vehicle movements at the hospital sites compared to the previous commercial contractor. And, the hospital has also created a dedicated environmental services team to oversee the collection of waste from remote buildings to bulk it at the waste transfer station.

Farid UK to supply twin compartment RCV to North Lincs

Vehicle supplier Farid UK is set to supply North Lincolnshire council with a twin compartment Selecto refuse collection vehicle (RCV) as part of its long-standing relationship with the local authority.

The vehicle is intended to be used for refuse and recycling kerbside collections, allowing both waste streams to be collected by the same compaction vehicle. The company claim that the Selecto has a guarantee of no-cross-contamination and its Terberg OmniDEL automatic triple lift means the vehicle is capable of handling both domestic and trade waste collections. The decision by North Lincolnshire to adopt the specialist vehicle marks the latest development in an 18-year relationship between the local authority and the West Sussex-based firm.

Commenting on the RCVs, Graham Sykes, operations manager at North Lincolnshire council, said: “We have been working with Farid UK over a number of years to develop a full and comprehensive range of vehicles to meet all our waste management needs. The vehicles supplied enable us to provide an efficient service to our residents and our trade waste customers.”

Network Rail has selected washing equipment specialist DUO Europe to operate a wash and water treatment plant in order to aid its spent track recycling programme.

The rail infrastructure body currently recycles spent track ballast on site and has sought a contractor to help remove hazardous material from spent track in order to allow it to be reused. Network Rail undertook market research of all available washing systems before taking the decision to invest in DUO washing technology. DUO, which has UK headquarters in Coventry, intends to have the wash and water treatment plant installed in the first quarter of 2011.

The Network Rail team has stated that DUO could supply and operate the plant with competence and provide a processing operation that is “totally flexible” with regards to future production requirements, such as increased tonnages or the processing of different materials.
