New recycling centre for Winchester

A new household waste recycling centre has opened in Winchester, Hampshire, replacing the site at Garnier Road.

The new site at Bar End was needed as the Garnier Road site became too small for the heavy usage it received, and vehicle access had become difficult.

The Bar End centre features a circular split-level design, which will allow bins to be serviced without having to temporarily close the site. The vehicle access has been improved with approximately double the number of parking spaces. There is also a sales area.

Councillor Keith Eslin of Hampshire county council said: “This will be a flagship site for Winchester, and for recycling in general throughout Hampshire. It is one of several new infrastructure developments coming on line in the county which will help consolidate Hampshire's nationally recognised position as one of the best in the UK for waste management and recycling.

TRASH for Cash in Cornwall

Five towns in South East Cornwall are running a household recycling competition to get residents in the area recycling.

The Town Recycling Award Scheme for Householders (TRASH) aims to increase recycling rates by householders in Caradon. The event is sponsored by Viridor Waste Management.

Callington, Likeard, Looe, Saltash and Torpoint are all taking part in the TRASH competition which offers a first prize of 1,000 and a second prize of 500 for the winning towns to spend on environmental projects.

The five towns' kerbside collection services have been monitored from mid October 2004 and mid January 2005, with prizes going to the towns that produce the highest average weight of recycling per property.

Tim German, chair of the community strategy's Environmental Action Group, said the towns would do well in the competition by recycling heavy materials like glass.

Mr German said: “Because the competition is based on the weight of the recycling, glass recycling is a great way to boost your town's total, and it couldn't be simpler. All you have to do pop your clean glass bottles into a carrier bag, tie it shut and leave it for collection with your other recycling.”

Recycling centre in Somerset reopened

Somerset county council's household waste recycling centre in Street has been officially reopened, following its refurbishment.

The site will continue to be run by Wyvern waste Ltd. Andrew Olie, managing director for Wyvern said: “Residents in the street have always been very enthusiastic for recycling and the centre has recently achieved high rates of over 70%.

“The improvements that have been made open the door to even higher levels of recycling and provides Street with an excellent opportunity to become the best recycling centre in England.”

To celebrate the reopening, bags of Priorswood compost were handed out for free to the first fifty visitors to the newly reopened centre. Somerset also handed out Wake-up-to-Waste goodie bags.
