Paper recycler UPM Shotton has been named employer of the year in the National Training and Modern Apprenticeship Awards – Wales 2005.

System engineer, John Frodsham, attended the awards at Cardiff City Hall on Thursday October 13 and was presented with the award.

He said: “We are delighted to be recognised by the Welsh Assembly for our training and development programme. We take on four apprentices each year and have a four year scheme that enables employee progress through the company and to make personal achievements by learning how a business functions.”

UPM was also nominated for an individual apprentices' achievement, with the company's Scott Small nominated.

The Lancashire Waste Partnership is running a door stepping campaign in an attempt to increase recycling within the partnership's thirteen local authorities.

Recycling promoters recruited and trained by Enventure Consultancy, will canvass 60,000 households throughout Lancashire over a six-week period.

Waste minimisation officer for Lancashire county council, Andrew Coombe, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to speak directly to residents and help raise the profile of our local recycling schemes.

“Residents will be informed about the kerbside facilities provided and encouraged to begin recycling or recycling more,” he added.

The project is to be funded through the Waste and Resources Action Programme as part of a wider campaign to encourage people to recycle more.

SOFA Project has expanded its service in Bristol by opening a new shop in the Withywood area of the city.

The outlet, situated on Queens Road, sells a selection of SOFA Project's range of furniture and white goods, including cookers, washing machines and beds.

SOFA Project has said that the new store, the organisations third in Bristol, will be used to service potential clients in the Southern suburbs of the city – an area previously neglected due to the first two stores' locations.

Julian Williams, SOFA director, said: “SOFA has limited its reach in Bristol for too long. Our new branch in Withywood will help those who live well away from the city centre and are not able to travel to Old Market.”

Paper recycler Aylesford Newsprint has appointed Gill Denbeigh as the company's new recycling area manager for Mid and East England.

Ms Denbeigh has previously worked for Waste Watch and Landfill Tax Credit distributors Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN) as well as the waste container company Plastic Omnium.

In her new role she will be based in Derbyshire and will be responsible for the day-to-day running of contracts with suppliers of recovered paper from Suffolk to the M40 corridor.
She will also become a familiar face to those a little further north, handling contracts and projects in the East Midlands and Yorkshire, the company said.

Ms Denbeigh said: “I'm really looking forward to using the skills that I’ve accumulated. Because my recycling experience is quite varied I am equally at home discussing practical contracts as I am giving help with educational and PR campaigns. Working for Aylesford will be a fantastic opportunity to develop real recycling solutions – something I truly believe in.”
