A new environmental centre has been opened at Northamptonshire's Barnwell Country Park for use by schools. The centre – Kingfisher Lodge – will provide information about recycling, minimising waste and caring for the environment.
The centre was opened by David Riddle, chief executive of Cory Environmental and funded by a variety of organisations: the Cory Environmental Trust, the county council, the Countryside Agency and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
Councillor Sue North, of East Northamptonshire district council, who also chairs the Cory Environmental Trust Northamptonshire, praised the project by saying: “This is a really worthwhile project that will help spread the message that we need to take care of the environment for future generations.”
Wyvern expands composting activity in Somerset
Wyvern Waste has opened a new compost site at the Walpole landfill site near Bridgewater, Somerset, this week.
The site will be used to produce “soil conditioner” from domestic garden waste with the composting operation taking place on a massive concrete slab, described as being equivalent to the size of two football pitches.
Wyvern hopes to process up to 15,000 tonnes of garden waste each year and expects that this will take the pressure off its Taunton-based compost facility at Priorswood.
About 500,000 has been invested overall in the facilities by Wyvern, which last year sold 20,000 40-litre bags of compost.
Andrew Olie, Wyvern's managing director, said that as “more and more people are recycling their garden waste now”, the new compost site will help the company “deal with it much more efficiently.”
Recycling helps boost Oxfordshire's sustainable development work
Audit Commission inspectors have reported positively on Oxfordshire county council's sustainable development work, which includes recycling and waste management.
The inspectors said that Oxfordshire's programme was 'good' and is promising for the future. The county was noted as having “a very good recycling and waste minimisation performance which is well on track to meet national targets.”
However, there was some criticism in that Oxfordshire has not been setting challenging or clear targets for their sustainability programme, and that there is a certain level of inconsistency in the environmental services and the way they have been implemented.
