SITA launches scrap metal business in North East
The company purchases both ferrous and non-ferrous metals to process and dispatch to consumers worldwide and said that it expects to recycle a significant amount of metals at the North Tyneside site during the next year. Formation of the business is set to create six new jobs. SITA UK claims to be recognised as one of the largest metal recyclers in the UK, processing and trading approximately 500,000 tonnes of material each year and supplying consumers around the world from its facilities across the country.
Andrew Hughes, SITA UK's regional manager for Tyne and Wear, said: “We are sourcing and collecting metals from a range of industrial sources and scrap merchants across the region, but are very much available to individuals, as well.”
Shropshire appoints new cabinet minister for waste
Councillor Mike Owen took up his position as new cabinet minister at the end of April and visited the Battlefield Enterprise Park recycling household waste and recycling facility in Shrewsbury to find out more about recycling and waste management in Shropshire. Cllr Owen, who praised the work of the council's waste contractor Veolia Environmental Services, takes over from councillor David Roberts, who chose to step down from the cabinet due to work commitments.
Commenting on his appointment, Cllr Owen said: “I'm delighted to take on responsibility for the council's waste and recycling services at a time when services are improving, and our recycling rate is rising and is well above the national average.”
CRR hits out at claims made in collection report
Source-separation advocates the Campaign for Real Recycling (CRR) have criticised the findings of the WYG report published earlier this month examining kerbside collections.
The report, which was commissioned by waste firm Greenstar UK, claimed that commingled collections could produce recyclable material of equal quality to source separated collections (see letsrecycle.com story). However, the CRR has claimed that the report's conclusions were made “without satisfactory evidence” and that it overlooked issues such as the impact different collection models would have on reducing residual waste, and they also questioned the outcome of the report in light of Greenstar's involvement.
Andy Moore, CRR coordinator, said: “It is hardly surprising that a report commissioned by one of the UK's largest commingling companies would reach these conclusions. We can see nothing in this report which should cause any local authority to question WRAP's analysis or judgement regarding choice of system.”
Linpac launches England World Cup bin
The firm is producing 11 red and white, ‘twin bin' recycling bins with the aim of having them situated in prominent locations, such as high streets, to encourage people to recycle while away from the home. The bins are being awarded to local authorities through a prize draw, with the 11 winners set to receive their bin ahead of England's opening group game against the USA on June 12.
Commenting on the promotion, Paul Black, general manager at Linpac Environmental, said: “We think that this is a great way to engage with the public and young people in particular and get people recycling cans and bottles on our High Streets. We hope that local authorities will want to get involved and use this as an opportunity to have some fun during the World Cup, support the England team and raise awareness through the local media for this important issue.”
Recycle Zone launched at Royal United Hospital in Bath
Over 50 recycling units are now available for patients, visitors, and staff at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) Bath to recycle their waste as part of a project co-ordinated and part funded by Bath & North East Somerset council.
The ‘Recycle Zone' is the first of its kind at a hospital in the south west, as part of the initiative funded by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and Coca-Cola Enterprises to increase on-the-go recycling. Recycle Zones have already been launched on city streets, at theme parks and also in hospitals elsewhere in the UK, since the scheme was launched by then-waste and recycling minister Joan Ruddock in May 2008 (see letsrecycle.com story). Units at the RHU are being placed at public locations across the hospital grounds in order to capture magazines, newspapers, cans and plastic bottles.
Councillor Charles Gerrish, Bath & North East Somerset council's cabinet member for customer services, said: “Encouraging people to recycle even more is part of Bath & North East Somerset council's efforts to tackle the causes and effects of climate change. The new Recycle Zone will provide one more place to recycle as much as possible.”
