Vince Cable opens Ward Recycling extension
Business Secretary Vince Cable has officially opened an extension to Ward Recycling’s facility in Middlesbrough.
The minister visited the North East-based firm to oversee the opening of a £450,000 glass clean-up extension – which is expected to create up to 56 jobs.
The extension forms part of a wider £3.2 million investment in the MRF, supported by a £500,000 grant from Let’s Grow – a Regional Growth Fund programme operated in partnership with Trinity Mirror, BE Group and UNW LLP.
Mr Cable unveiled an official opening plaque to mark the completion of the 5,000 sq ft extension and joined Ward Recycling’s manager Gareth Godwin for a tour of the site, which processes around 1,300 tonnes of recyclables each week.
Mr Cable said: “Today I was pleased to see Ward Recycling’s impressive expansion plans. Their state-of-the-art facility will enable them to exploit overseas markets and increase their workforce.”
Mr Godwin added: “The Business Secretary’s visit has been a great way to mark the latest stage of our ambitious expansion. This investment represents the progress we’ve made as a company and has gone a long way to establishing the area as a hub for the green energy industry.”

Hiscox Insurance enters waste market
Insurance broker Waste Insure has announced a partnership with global insurer Hiscox Insurance Company Ltd for waste and recycling businesses.
The A-rated insurer will offer property, plant and business interruption cover through Waste Insure a part of the Direct Insurance Group.
The news comes despite fears that some insurers may be pulling out of cover for the waste industry, with a spate of high profile fires having pushed up premiums for businesses in the sector.
Commenting on the move David Bearman, Direct Insurance Group chief executive, said: “Risks of this nature have faced increasing challenges in obtaining appropriate cover as a result of many markets withdrawing from this area. Our 10 years plus continuous experience and specialist knowledge of this fast evolving industry has meant we have developed a unique risk management process and approach which was recognised by Hiscox.
“Our alignment with Hiscox, the market leaders in product innovation, will ensure our customers continue to receive the same high level of service, backed by world class capacity they have come to expect from us”.

Wastecycle deploys new vehicle software
East Midlands-based waste and recycling firm Wastecycle is to deploy new software collection vehicles technology as part of a deal with AMCS Group.
The AMCS software will replace a number of Wastecycle’s older systems – managing the company’s daily operations including route planning, vehicle tracking and weighbridge operations.
It will also manage customer activities including SLAs, pricing, invoicing and customer services.
Commenting on the agreement, Wastecycle’s commercial director Paul Clements, said: “Wastecycle’s investment in this new technology will ensure we are able to further optimise our operational efficiency, which will in turn help our customers to control their recycling costs.”
“Just as importantly, however, it will provide us with market leading materials and service information, which we will be able to share online with our clients. Our customers with multiple sites and services such as universities will have access to an unrivalled granularity of real time data from a consolidated cross organisational view down to a single lift of an individual bin.”

Viridor donates compost to Palace Gardens
Waste management firm Viridor has announced the donation of 30 tonnes of its own-brand Revive compost to Kent Gardens Trust – with a view to ‘transform’ the Archbishop’s Palace Gardens.
Kent Gardens Trust tends the Apothecary’s Garden at the 12th Century residence, which is open to the public between May and August each year.
The donation comes as Kent Gardens looks to refurbish the attraction for20 years after it was initially constructed on behalf of Maidstone borough council.
Viridor organics manager Bill Griffiths said: “Organic waste is an important resource and transforming it into a quality, safe and versatile compost means we’re continuing in our efforts to support a circular economy wherever possible.”

Gemi acquires waste export activities
Geminor AS has taken over all waste and recycling activities previously operated by Akata BIO Energy APS in Denmark.
The acquisition will see the energy recovery specialist operate as Geminor DK APS in Denmark, and gives the firm a broader foundation in the Danish energy from waste market.
The takeover also provides opportunities for further development of the Group’s energy recovery services, with companies already operating in the UK, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
Meanwhile, former chief executive of Akata BIO Energy Tim Anderson will also join Geminor DK APS, with a focus on the Danish market.
