Lafarge Cement in bid to use waste fuel

If the application is approved as expected later this Spring, the company will source the fuel through its subsidiary firm Glacier. It believes the SRF, made by a mechanical biological treatment plant from household and municipal solid waste, could reduce the Works' carbon footprint by up to 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. The application is the first to use the new British Cement Association Code of Practice for waste-derived fuels, a voluntary measure developed with input from the Agency.

John Pickering, commercial manager for Glacier, said: “We believe this particular application to use SRF would help our parent company Lafarge Cement improve its environmental performance, help contribute to climate change reduction targets, and help control increasing fuel costs. SRF would be a particularly good choice for Cauldon Works as it comes in a similar format to processed sewage pellets, meaning it could be incorporated into existing handling and feeding systems.”


Plastics firm launches HDPE recycling website

Nampak Plastics has launched a new website showing consumers the environmental benefits of HDPE bottles and their “closed loop” recycling.

Following the company's decision to become a reprocessor of used HDPE milk bottles alongside its manufacturing activities, its new website – www.bottle2bottle.com – explains how HDPE bottles can be turned back into new packaging. The company, which is working towards a 30% recycled content bottle for 2009, has provided fun activities for children, links to local authorities detailing HDPE recycling information and “video tours” of its facilities.

James Crick, business development director of Nampak Plastics said: “The HDPE milk bottle has a home in every household fridge and a place on every breakfast table and, while very popular, consumers probably don't give them a second thought. The idea behind bottle2bottle.com is to be an engaging, information source on the environmental benefits of HDPE milk bottles at a time when packaging and recycling is regularly a focus of national and media attention.”

More than 2,100 residents of Worcestershire and Herefordshire attended “Swap Shop” events last month, allowing them to trade unwanted items to keep them out of the bin.

Worcestershire county council hosted events in Worcester, Bromsgrove and Kidderminster, launched by the television presenter Keith Chegwin. Reporting back this week, the county council's waste prevention team said it was now encouraging community groups to run their own “Swap Shop” events.

Cllr Derek Prodger, cabinet member for environment at Worcestershire county council, said: “As well as being fun community events, the Swap Shops drove home an important message about the need to re-use items in a bid to reduce the number of valuable resources which are sent to landfill. Lots of people said they would like to attend future events, so we're appealing to everyone to hold their own Swap Shops.”

Composting company AWO Bedford & Partners has been awarded a £10,000 grant by Remade East to buy a new screening machine to improve the quality of its compost product.

The compost screening machine is used to sort the processed compost, removing all large and non-compostable material from the product such as large wood chips and plastics. AWO Bedford is based in Ramsay, near Peterborough, and processes around 12,000 tonnes of material a year. The company's site manager, Tom Bedford, said: “We are thrilled to receive the support from Remade East. The new equipment has allowed us to sort the compost into a cleaner grade material, producing a more marketable product as well as increasing the supply to the area.”

Remade East is funded by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) through its Business Resource Efficiency and Waste programme. Simon Chiva, programme director for Remade East, said: “Helping businesses to develop is one of the main aims of our capital grants scheme. This grant will enable AWO Bedford and Partners to provide local landscape gardeners and tree surgeons with an improved recycling facility, as well as increasing the supply of compost to gardeners.”

Hampshire-based waste management firm Hippowaste has said its entire fleet of collection vehicles are registered as fully compliant with the new Low Emission Zone in London.

The company, which has its headquarters in Fareham, has checked and registered its fleet of 40 vehicles, which includes 26-tonne DAF lorries and smaller 7.5 tonne vehicles, to meet the new emissions controls that came into force this month within the capital.

James Bennett, Hippowaste chief executive, said: “As well as our ‘green' collection fleet, we also recycle on average more than 80% of the waste we collect, making this a truly eco-friendly solution to waste disposal for Londoners.”
