LondonEnergy offers free books to children this summer

From 26 July, and for the duration of the school summer holidays, The ReUse Shop on Kings Road, Chingford, will be offering free books for local children of all ages. The free books campaign, which is organised by LondonEnergy, aims to provide access to books for all children in the area, helping to keep them entertained over the long summer break.

At any one time, The ReUse Shop can stock over 1000 books including popular recent titles such as Meet the Weather, Scientists Saving the World, Which Way to Anywhere and The Storm Swimmer. A number of classic children’s titles such as The Hungry Caterpillar, Paddington, Harry Potter are also regularly available. Books will be limited to 5 per household.

Commenting on the launch of the campaign Katie Blowes from LondonEnergy said: “Reading is so important and we hope this campaign will help young children realise these language, literacy and emotional benefits. There is also a really positive environmental benefit in reusing books and toys that might otherwise have been lost in our waste bins. The Free Books campaign will run until 31 August 2024.

Suez recognised for its dedication to military veterans

Suez recycling and recovery UK has been named in the 100 GREAT British Employers of Veterans, a showcase of the UK’s Forces Friendly employers and what they offer to military veterans.

The GREAT British Employers of Veterans programme was created last year by the organisers of the Ex-Forces in Business Awards, to provide an in-depth guide to organisations where veterans can build a meaningful second career.

Suez employs 284 veterans, who bring their highly transferable skills and dedication to a variety of roles – from driving vehicles to energy-from-waste operations technician, to area supervisor and other managerial positions.

Suez set up its Veterans Network in 2018 to offer support and advice to employees who are ex-forces, and are also provided a ‘buddy’ to help them in the transition to civilian life and their new career.

Tracey Leghorn, chief business services Officer at Suez, said: “It’s a huge achievement to be recognised as one of the 100 Great British Employers of Veterans. We’re so proud to support the armed forces community, our veterans at Suez bring a wealth of skills and experience to our organisation and we are committed to supporting them to develop fulfilling careers within the business.”

Cambridgeshire motorists fined £400 for littering cigarettes

South Cambridgeshire district council has fined two motorists £400 each, after they threw cigarette butts out of car windows.

One of the motorists was driving along the A10 Ely Road and the other was driving on Cambridge Road, Fulbourn. The incidents happened on separate dates.

Both offenders were given the opportunity to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) rather than attend court for the offence.

Councillor Natalie Warren-Green, lead cabinet member for environmental services and waste, said: “Cigarette butts are made of plastic and do not biodegrade. They can contain a combination of chemicals including formaldehyde, nicotine, arsenic, lead and copper. Every cigarette butt tossed to the ground is a tiny toxin that poisons our environment. These small acts of negligence accumulate, harming wildlife, polluting waterways and littering our local communities. Please discard of cigarette butts responsibly.”

Figures from Keep Britain Tidy show cigarette butts make up two thirds of all littered items, with nearly three million cigarette butts thrown as litter in the UK every day.

Latest studies and evidence from UK Government show that smoking related litter costs UK local authorities approximately £40 million per year to deal with.
