Agency to consult on MBT guidance
The consultation will seek views on how to simplify sampling and test methods required by Agency guidance on monitoring plans for MBT and other processes under the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme.
As part of the consultation process, the Agency will be holding a stakeholder workshop in London on November 7, to discuss its proposals and hear the views of those affected.
Clydesdale offers support for recycling and waste firms
The unit is to be headed by natural resources specialist Richard Nuttall, 38, who has joined Clydesdale Bank's London West End Financial Solutions Centre as a business partner after 20 years' experience with Barclays Bank.
Mr Nuttall said: “The green agenda for recycling and waste management is resulting in fresh opportunities for companies dealing with both the commercial sector and local authorities. The way that the financial aspects of new and established projects are structured is an important factor in the successful delivery of sustainable waste management solutions. Through our approach to the sector, we will provide the appropriate financial solutions for our customers.”
ASDA to stock recycled stationery
Supermarket chain ASDA is to stock recycled stationery products on its shelves for the first time, after receiving support from the Waste and Resources Action Programme and Recycling Action Yorkshire.
Stores across the country will sell 18 recycled product lines, including ASDA-brand and branded notebooks. ASDA received information and advice from RAY's Buy Recycled 'Hands on Support' programme and WRAP's recycled paper advocacy team. The supermarket said the move was in line with the environmental pledges made by ASDA in the last year.
Lorna Peacock, RAY's procurement project manager, said: “If the recycling industry in Yorkshire is to grow and prosper there has to be markets for its products. This is why RAY is actively promoting the benefits of buying and selling recycled products to businesses within the region, providing an incentive for recycling businesses to invest in the Yorkshire and Humber region.”
Packaging technology brings waste savings
The trials were undertaken by WRAP, working with International Food Partners and packaging technology firm Ceetak Ltd. They found a new sealing technology called “Integrity Seal” that allows less plastic film to be used sealing bags – saving packaging while potentially increasing shelf life of goods. The technology is now being trialled by Marks & Spencer and by suppliers to ASDA and other major retailers.
WRAP project manager Andrew Parry said: “The continuing work to develop this technology is proof that packaging optimisation can deliver packaging savings and, by enabling shelf life extension, potentially reduce food waste.”
TiTech offers new sorting technology
Optical sorting technology manufacturer TiTech has said it can now offer systems for the sorting of metals, flame retardants in plastics, plastic and glass flakes.
The systems, which use reflected visible and infrared light to differentiate between material types, are already used to sort paper, polymers and beverage cartons. The new capability follows TiTech's acquisition of German specialists CommoDas GmbH last year, bringing in new technology including X-ray transmission imaging.
In the UK, the technologies are now being made available through the company's new subsidiary, TiTech Visionsort Limited, which is based in the Midlands. Jonathan Clarke, head of TiTech's UK operations, commented: “Together, TiTech and CommoDaS will have an unrivalled technology base from which to grow further.”
