Council first for Every Can Counts

Working with the Partnership, Every Can Counts is supporting on-street recycling in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of the White Horse district councils. New on-street recycling bins are being installed in seven town centres across both authorities. And, as part of the partnership, Every Can Counts has provided promotional materials to help raise awareness and encourage the local community to recycle using the new bins.

The partnership will also involve an educational road show visiting schools and colleges in both districts. The first of these road shows took place in Henley, where students at the Henley College were encouraged to recycle through challenges. The challenges included the Can You Kick it competition using the Every Can Counts inflatable football goal and guessing the number of crushed cans in a bale, for a chance to win recycling goodies and music vouchers.

Working with local authorities to promote on-street recycling is an exciting first for us, said Diana Caldwell, marketing manager for Every Can Counts. Around 30% of the 9 billion cans sold every year are consumed outside the home; mainly in workplaces and whilst on the go, so they do not get picked up for recycling through kerbside collections for domestic waste.

B&M Waste Services win University of Chester

Wirral-based Bagnall & Morris Waste Services has been appointed to provide a waste and recycling service for the University of Chester from August 2011. The contract, said B&M, further bolsters the companys education portfolio, which already includes Liverpool Community Colleges, Wirral Metropolitan Colleges and Bury College.

The general waste contract was rewarded after a competitive tender process which included an electronic tender as well as a face-to-face presentation. The company will be providing its total waste management solution for all of the University of Chesters sites. B&M will also be offering separate collections of recyclable material, as well as general waste, to improve University of Chesters environmental performance.

Kevin Wood, commercial manager atB&M Waste Services commented: This is a hugely important new account for the team and builds on the successful tender with Wirral Metropolitan College earlier this year. The contract gives us the opportunity to improve the recycling/recovery rates for the University of Chester across all sites. Well also be working with the university to ensure that waste management becomes an integral part of their Carbon Management Plan.

Powerday launch London Irish shirt recycling scheme

Powerday, shirt sponsor of the London Irish Rugby Club, has launched a shirt recycling scheme with the club. It has teamed up with the LV= sponsored SOS Kit Aid charity which providesunwanted rugby kit to children of all abilities and backgrounds in disadvantaged countries. And, the charity claims that over 300 tonnes of environmentally damaging CO2 emissions have been saved by recycling over 50,000 tonnes of sports kit to date.

As well as the Shirt Amnesty recycling scheme having a positive social and environmental impact, London Irish supporters can benefit too. Supporters will receive a 10 discount voucher for donating their old shirt which can be reclaimed when they purchase a new replica or pro fit shirt.

Accumulator transfers battery customers to G&P

Exeter-based Accumulator Recycling has transferred its UK customer base for battery recycling to waste battery and collection company, G & P Batteries. G&P, of Darlaston, took over collections for all Accumulator customers from 1 July 2011 in an agreement which pools the expertise of two major battery specialists.

G&P Batteries is the UKs leading collection and recycling company for of all types of waste batteries. The company operates a nationwide service which banks, collects, sorts and recycles any type of battery, from major industrial batteries to the tiny batteries that power wrist watches.

Kurt Kyck, managing director of Accumulator Recycling, said: We are confident that the efficient, friendly batteries service our customers have come to associate with Accumulator Recycling will not only continue, but expand with this agreement, which represents a pooling of the expertise of two major battery specialists – an important factor in todays regulatory environment.

Printwaste Recycling expands in the Midlands

Printwaste Recycling & Shredding is expanding its services in the West Midlands and Worcestershire areas after securing new contracts. The Cheltenham-based company said it is experiencing greater demand for its confidential data destruction services as more and more businesses recognise the need to dispose of sensitive documents and information responsibly and securely.

In the West Midlands, recent new customers include Sandwell Homes in West Bromwich and Dudley metropolitan borough council, to which it provides confidential data shredding and recycling services, including the recycling of plastics, cans, paper and cardboard from 120 schools.

Printwastes other new business gains in the Worcester and Evesham areas involve single-supplier complete waste management solutions for Southco, an automotive parts manufacturer and Amcor Flexibles, a leading packaging company.

On-site shredding adds an extra level of security as there is no need to transport confidential material, other than in an unreadable state. Clients can even watch their confidential data being shredded, if they so wish, and receive a certificate of destruction as proof of compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998, comments Printwaste Managing Director, Don Robins.
