The Retread Manufacturers Association is to launch a new initiative to improve the marketing of retreaded tyres in the UK.
The Green Tyre Dealer Scheme aims to raise the awareness of the environmental benefits of retreaded tyres and provide easy access to information about where to buy them.
RMA director Sheila Ikin commented: “Retreaded tyres offer massive environmental and economic benefits to both private and commercial drivers. We believe the Green Tyre Dealer Scheme will play a significant role in helping us communicate this fact with the green consumer as well as helping us to raise the profile of environmentally friendly tyre dealers who actively stock and promote retreaded tyres.”
The campaign will include a website to direct consumers to their nearest Green Tyre Dealer Scheme member, a targeted publicity campaign and the publication of a Buyers' Guide. Membership of the Green Tyre Dealer Scheme will be by invitation only. It is expected that the scheme will undergo an initial trial, followed by a wider recruitment drive during 2004.
Swansea nears 3,000 tonnes per month of collected recyclables
Swansea council is celebrating the success of its recycling service, which collected 2,991 tonnes last month.
The figure is up by 69% on Swansea's August 2002 figure of 1,765 tonnes and means that Swansea has met the Welsh Assembly's 15% recycling target a year early.
The council introduced its fortnightly kerbside collection scheme in March this year. It now covers 75,000 households, collecting paper, glass and cans and contributes between 20-30 tonnes of materials a day to the overall total.
David Jones, Swansea's cabinet member for the environment, said: “The public have embraced kerbside recycling and their participation has been massive. It is only with their support and enthusiasm that we have managed to become one of the leading performing local authorities in Wales for recycling.”
Warwickshire sets up printer cartridge recycling service
Warwickshire county council has set up a “freepost” recycling scheme for printer cartridges and mobile phones.
Freepost envelopes will be sent out to 213,000 households in the county to allow residents to send items through the post. The scheme has received support from Biffaward through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and income generated will go to three local charities. Recycler Office Green will take the inkjet and toner cartridges and mobile phones.
Cllr Ken Browne, portfolio holder for transport, environment and rural affairs at Warwickshire county council, said: “This scheme is an easy, effective way of getting rid of your unwanted old printer cartridges and mobile phones, while also benefiting very worthwhile local charities. Hopefully people will take this opportunity to help both the environment and the local community.”
