Envirovue to manage waste for Southern Water

Waste management company Envirovue has been appointed by Southern Water to manage waste across over 400 sites.
Southern Water is responsible for the public wastewater collection and treatment for more than 4.7 million people. Its head of contractor service delivery, Mike Chapman, said: “We are delighted to have appointed Envirovue as our specialist waste partner.
“This strategic framework agreement will play a vital role in supporting our business and operational demands and achieve enhanced resilience throughout the next Asset Management Period (AMP8).”
Envirovue specialises in the management of hazardous and specialist waste streams.
Dan Redfern, director at Envirovue, added: “We’re thrilled to be working with Southern Water to drive cost effective, sustainable waste practices across the region. Our team has worked extensively for two years to secure this contract and we’re delighted to be the supplier of choice.
“Through a combination of advanced data insights, waste restructuring and route optimisation, we’re expecting to see Southern Water lead the way in environmental performance.”
Yorwaste adopts anti-greenwashing certification
Yorkshire-based Yorwaste has officially become the first organisation in the UK to adopt an anti-greenwashing certification developed by European bin recycling and manufacturing specialist ESE World.
The certification system provides verifiable physical proof of recycled content in waste containers.
Geraldine Lear, principal transport services manager at Yorwaste, said: “Providing a range of services and bespoke solutions to an enlightened customer base means we are under the spotlight when it comes to sustainability.
“It’s therefore crucial we can evidence what we’re doing to make a difference – not only to set a more ethical precedent for our customers but to support the success of tender contracts too.”
Peter Vernon, managing director at ESE, added: “We know this market and we know it well. More importantly, we’re the only player able to offer coloured options within the closed-loop system – an area that sees many other bin manufacturers compromise on their ethos and turn back to raw materials.”
Biffa launches range of bins made of recycled bins
Biffa has announced that it will be recycling its old commercial waste bins into brand news ones.
The recycled bins contain 80% recycled HDPE and are said to be as “robust and reliable” as the virgin plastic originals.
The recycling process sees the old containers shredded into flakes before being turned into pellets which are then melted and injected into special bin-shaped moulds.
The bins – manufactured by Contenur UK in Liverpool – are available to business waste customers across the UK including residual, dry mixed recycling, food and glass.
Trevor Gardener, head of container management at Biffa, said: “It’s a great example of us working with our innovation partners to place even more products into the circular economy, reducing our emissions as we strive towards our target to become net zero by 2050.
“Alongside re-use and surplus redistribution, recycling produces fewer carbon emissions compared to disposing of them and then using virgin material to make new goods from scratch. This not only helps in the fight against climate change but ensures the preservation of valuable natural resources.”
NLWA’s education programme receives seal of approval
The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) has received the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge for its primary school education programme.
The programme invites students take part in interactive education sessions where they learn about waste management, waste reduction and environmental planning at the NLWA’s Edmonton EcoPark House.
The industry-recognised LOtC badge – which is supported by the Department of Education –provides an independently-assessed benchmark for school-focused education programmes.
NLWA chair, councillor Clyde Loakes, said: “The Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, although a bit of a mouthful, is a fantastic accolade and well-deserved recognition of the thought that went into making sure our sessions deliver great educational outcomes for students.
“We’re the first trip provider in London and only the fourth in the country to be awarded this badge of honour, which shows the exceptionally high standard of our education programme. This is just one of the many ways we are able to use EcoPark house as a valuable community space with real social value for local residents of all ages!”
