Bristol Cathedral appoints Grundon as waste management partner

Bristol Cathedral has appointed Grundon Waste Management as its waste management partner following a review of its waste and recycling arrangements as part of wider sustainability plans.
Under the agreement, Grundon will provide general waste, mixed recycling, food waste and glass collections, alongside flexible support for larger events and seasonal changes in waste volumes.
The company will also manage the disposal and treatment of all waste streams, helping the cathedral simplify recycling processes, improve waste data reporting and increase recycling rates.
Nick Malvern, Waste Management Sales Lead at Grundon, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Bristol Cathedral and to be supporting an organisation that plays such an important role in the city.
“By providing a simpler recycling set up, detailed reporting and the flexibility to respond quickly when requirements change, we look forward to helping the cathedral achieve its sustainability objectives in the years ahead.”
Wimbledon DRS pilot to test reverse vending machines

Danone’s evian brand has partnered with The All England Lawn Tennis Club and Exchange for Change to pilot reverse vending machines (RVMs) at this year’s Championships Qualifying Competition.
The pilot, taking place at the Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre in Roehampton, has allowed spectators to purchase evian 75cl plastic bottles with a 20p deposit added at the point of sale.
Empty bottles can then be returned via RVMs, with all deposits donated to the Wimbledon Foundation.
The initiative aims to test how the system operates in a live event environment, while gathering insights to help shape the consumer experience ahead of the DRS launch in 2027.
Kate McFerran, Corporate Affairs Director at Exchange for Change, said: “We are excited to see this pilot go live at such an iconic event.
“The insights gained from this pilot, as well as others taking place over the coming months, will help ensure the Scheme is designed to be as efficient and consumer friendly as possible so we can all play our part in removing litter from our environment and building a stronger circular economy.”
EMR joins £6.5m REACT-UK project to boost UK rare earth recycling

EMR has joined the £6.5 million REACT-UK (Rare Earth Automotive Circular Technologies for the UK) project, which aims to establish a circular supply chain for rare earth magnets used in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Supported through the DRIVE35 programme, the collaboration brings together HyProMag, Mkango Rare Earths UK, Jaguar Land Rover, Less Common Metals, the University of Birmingham and EMR to develop technologies for recovering, recycling and remanufacturing rare earth magnets from end-of-life vehicles.
Mike Hogan, Corporate Development Manager at EMR, commented: “Projects like REACT UK demonstrate how we can build greater resilience by recovering the materials already in circulation.
“By bringing together dismantling, recovery, recycling and remanufacturing expertise, we’re helping create a domestic supply chain for rare earth magnets that keeps these materials in use for longer and supports the UK’s ambitions for economic growth, energy security and net-zero.”
EMR will use its expertise in electric vehicle batteries, end-of-life vehicles and research and development to recover magnet-containing components and explore improved dismantling processes with Jaguar Land Rover.
North Warwickshire launches superhero-themed food waste collection fleet

North Warwickshire Borough Council has introduced a fleet of five superhero-themed vehicles to support its new weekly food waste collection service, which launched on 6 July.
More than 300 pupils from local junior schools entered a competition to design eco-superheroes and name the vehicles, with five winning entries selected by local councillors.
Fleet wrapping specialist Creative Vehicle Wrapping (CVW) brought the children’s designs to life, creating bespoke liveries for the new collection vehicles.
Residents will now see Avenger Avocado, Eco-Eats, Eco Pickle Power, Super Pineapple and Brock Lee collecting food waste across the borough.
Margaret Bell, Deputy Leader and chair of the Community and Environment Board at North Warwickshire Borough Council, said: “The vehicles look fantastic! What a great way to engage with our local children, spread the word about the new service and communicate to the whole community the importance of food waste recycling.”
