CSG donates money towards Redcar school play area
Children at Westgarth Primary School in Redcar have received a donation of £600 from CSG’s Teesside base in Middlesbrough through its Community Chest Initiative.
The donation comes via the OPAL programme – of which the school is a member – which aims to help schools across the country redesign their playgrounds.
CSG’s donation will be put towards new materials for the play area.
Rachael Greenwood, of Westgarth Primary School, said: “We are so grateful to CSG for their support. We are committed to making playtime more interesting and exciting for our pupils and CSG have really embraced our plans.
“The OPAL Primary Programme is all about giving children a different play experience, providing them with basic materials to ignite their imagination and allow creativity to flourish. They can build, climb and explore their limits in a safe environment.
“This money will allow us to buy new materials for the children to enjoy.”
SocietyWorks to provide Bexley with residential waste portal
SocietyWorks will be supplying the London borough of Bexley with WasteWorks – an integrated front-end residential waste portal.
The first phase of the project will deliver a limited version of the service, including an Application Programming Interface (API) integration into the Council’s in-cab system – which is provided by Whitespace Work Software.
This phase will enable residents to check their bin days and report any missed collections.
Future phases look to introduce functionality such as bulky item and green garden waste subscriptions, new container and assisted collection requests and clinical waste collections.
SocietyWorks’ FixMyStreet Pro software has been used by Bexley since 2019 and provides a way for residents to report local street, highway and environment problems.
Rob Flicker, project lead at Bexley, said: “[We] were looking for a new Waste solution to improve our resident journey, providing an easy-to-use reporting tool and full integration with our Waste Management system. We evaluated several different options and selected WasteWorks as the best fit for Bexley.”
Welsh council leader quits over bin collections
The BBC has reported that Labour’s Ian Roberts has decided to step down as leader of Flintshire council in Wales.
The announcement was made last Tuesday (30 July) after the Labour-led council received backlash when it attempted to change bin collections from every two weeks to every three weeks. The proposal was rejected.
An excess of 3,300 signed a petition against the proposed changes, citing concerns that it would result in “large piles of rubbish dumped in the streets, odour issues and vermin”.
The county was previously threatened with a fine of £1.2 million by the Welsh government due to repeatedly missing recycling targets. It was recommended that they switch to monthly collections.
Roberts amended the motion to three-weekly in an attempt to compromise with the public. He commented at the time: “Some of the language that’s been used in this debate concerns me very greatly and the social media storm that’s arisen because of this concerns me as well”.
More than half of Welsh council are likely to cut bin collections to three or four weeks due to pressure from the Welsh government.
Circulai and Evreka to bring digital waste platform to the UK
Waste management company Circulai and software company Evreka – which specialises in waste and material management tracking – have announced a partnership to bring an “all-in-one” digital waste platform to the UK.
They aim to utilise real-time data and AI-generated insights to improve waste management services. Data from the operations will be stored in Evreka’s all-in-one management platform, which monitors waste as it moves through the collection and recycling process.
The collaboration says it hopes to work with partners in the public and private sectors across different industries, including waste generators, processors, recyclers, brand owners, and regulators.
Max Kanda, co-founder of Circulai, said: “This software allows us to centralise and scale the tracking of all waste movements through each step of our supply chain.
“The centralisation and tracking methods implemented will allow third-party certification of our waste management practices beyond any standards we’ve seen within the industry.”
