Re-Spark, an initiative of the Newbury Community Furniture Project, has set up a workshop to repair unwanted electrical appliances including cookers, washing machines and fridges for re-use.
The project has received its grant from the Social, Economic and Environmental Development (SEED) Programme, managed by the Royal Society for Nature Conservation (RSNC) and its consortium partners.
As well as contributing to local landfill diversion targets, the new community project will provide low-cost electrical goods for low-income families. It will also enable volunteers to gain new skills and will encourage disadvantaged people to get involved.
Commenting on the grant success, Community Furniture Project manager Jacky Akam said: “Thanks to the Lottery grant from the SEED Programme, we shall be able to take old electrical items, refurbish them and put them back into use for people on low incomes, and at the same time improve the environment of West Berkshire.”
The SEED programme is funded by the National Lottery, as part of the New Opportunities Fund, distributing money to stimulate local community enterprise and promote sustainability.
