The new rescape banks – supplied by bin manufacturer Taylor – replace four individual banks, which the council claim were “regularly repositioned by homeward bound clubbers.”

Positioned on a car park close to the town centre, the location is regularly used for the collection of clear glass, mixed brown and green glass, cans and textiles. The four original banks were designed to be lifted by truck mounted cranes and were not fixed to the ground making them prime targets for overturning.
When the banks were moved, often overturned, it would cause the recyclables collected inside them to tip across the car park.
Objectives
Ian MacKenzie, recycling officer at Canterbury, said: “We had two objectives for the site – improving the look of the area and preventing vandalism. The rescape banks address both of these issues, aesthetically it is a great improvement and the mess caused by tipping banks has stopped completely.”
According to Mr MacKenzie, tipping over the banks was creating a mess and often dangerous hazards in the area.
Canterbury city council currently has one of the best recycling rates in the country, in 2004/05 its recycling and composting rate was 33.7%.
