Mr Hirons has been the communications director for the organisation, which advocates energy from waste alongside recycling and composting, since October last year. Prior to joining the EWA he was head of press and parliamentary affairs at the Institute of Wastes Management for eight years.
Mr Hirons, (pictured) takes over from Andrew Banfield, who had been seconded to the association from SITA as its acting director for the past six months.
The new director said: “I intend to promote energy from waste, alongside recycling and composting, as an essential part of any sustainable waste strategy and work with all organisations invovled in waste managment and associated industries to ensure that we work together to promote and advance the highest standards of waste management.”
There remains speculation that the EWA will one day be merged into the broader Environmental Services Association.
