New director for London Community Recycling Network

As the London Community Recycling Network continues to expand, it has appointed a new director to head up its activities.

Matthew Thomson, formerly a director of learning for the London-based School for Social Entrepreneurs, is to take up the post on September 4 and will head a 15 strong team at the LCRN.

The London organisation is now thought to be larger in staff numbers than the Bristol-based national Community Recycling Network organisation. Last week LCRN communications officer Vicky Kington, confirmed that the London organisation wanted to take on more of a national role.

Mr Thomson, who left the SSE earlier this summer, spent less than a year with the school where he was building its “knowledge and experience into such domains as social policy, sector strategy and 'the mainstream'.” Prior to this he was formerly co-director of Time Bank and vice-chair of London Cycling Campaign.

Travelling
He joined the SSE after spending 20 months travelling in East Asia, South Asia and South East Africa with a spell in Central Europe.

Following this Mr Thomson said: “This was the proverbial voyage of a lifetime and I met many inspiring people in my journeys. Poor countries are great places to find people making the most of slender resources and I am certain that we in Britain have much to learn from the so called 'less developed countries', especially when it comes to social enterprise. I am keen to explore ways of linking communities of social entrepreneurs across borders.”
