Incorporating a split-level civic amenity site and a waste transfer station, the new facility at the Shaftesbury Lane Industrial Estate will handle around 30,000 tonnes of material a year.
SITA and its sub-contractors, W & S Recycling, aim to recycle over 65% of the household, commercial and industrial waste received at the site. There are provisions for glass, cardboard, textiles, construction materials, wood and metal to be collected separately, while garden waste and electrical appliances will also be dealt with at the site.
Waste from householders will be taken free of charge, and non-hazardous trade waste will also be taken subject to small businesses setting up accounts with SITA.
Commenting at the launch of the centre, David Foster, SITA UK’s regional director, said: ‘The size of the recycling centre and excellent access to the facilities mean that it will be easier and faster for everybody in the area to recycle their waste. This is very important as householders have an important part to play in its success.’
The new facility is a significant part of Dorset County Council's aim to reach government targets of 10% recycling by 2003-04, 18% by 2005-06 and 33% by 2010. SITA's contract to manage the annual 336,000 tonnes of waste from Dorset has been running since August 1994.
