National group aims to stop duplication in regional recycling research

As projects multiply across the UK to promote local projects to use recycled materials, a group has been formed to develop best practice and ensure there is no unnecessary duplication of projects.

Within the UK more than 12 projects are already underway along the ReMaDe style which are looking to find alternative uses for material, such as cullet in road materials and cardboard for animal bedding.

But, there is some concern that some of the projects may not be making sufficient headway and need closer scrutiny.

The new group to help co-ordinate activity met in Manchester last week and agreed to form the UK Market Development Network. Those presented represented programmes in Sctoland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as most regions of England. The meeting was hosted by the Trafford Park Business Forum.

The group is to received funding from the Waste and Resources Action Programme and speaking after the meeting WRAP chief executive Jennie Price said that she welcomed the formation of the Network.

“Not only will it provide an effective forum for information exchange between the regional programmes, it will also provide a link between the work that WRAP is doing at the national level with important local and regional initiatives. If the country is to meet the targets set in the UK waste strategies, such co-operation wil be absolutely essential.

The Network's next meeting will be held in Chelmsford on May 22, hosted by ReMaDe Essex.

Dr David Davies has been appointed as the Network's first co-ordinator.
