MYGroup to introduce Black Soldier Fly farming

Waste management company MYGroup has announced that it will open its first Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farm this month at its site in The Maltings in South Milford, Yorkshire.

BSF farming offers waste management benefits alongside protein production through a process called insect bioconversion.

Bioconversion involves feeding organic waste to BSF larvae, which consume and metabolise the material into a series of byproducts, including “frass” – a substance that can be used as organic fertiliser, as well as various nutrient-rich proteins.

The new facility will open within the next month

These proteins serve as an alternative to conventional protein sources such as fishmeal for use in the poultry, swine, pet and aquatic feed industries.

MYGroup has been working with BSF for a number of years to create an Insect Protein Meal product for the aquatic feeds market. The company also has a BSF partnership with Fera Science which specialises in agri-food science research.

Steve Carrie, group director at MYGroup, said: “Our developing work with BSF is bridging the gap between waste management and the rapidly growing protein production industry.

“Breeding and rearing larvae in-house is a critical step in putting our business at the forefront of this transformative sector. Insects might not be everyone’s cup of tea just yet, but they’re undeniably efficient, sustainable and soon to be the heroes of the future food system.”
