This initiative spans across Specsavers’ UK stores and aims to promote recycling within the optical brand’s outlets.
The initiative provides customers with a simple and convenient way to recycle their used metal and plastic eyewear, contact lenses and other accessories, including mixed-material blister packs.
Since its creation in 2022, MYGroup has said the scheme has successfully collected and recycled 100 tons of waste optical items. This is equivalent to diverting the weight of a 757 commercial airliner from landfill or incineration.
All collected waste is processed by MYGroup at its Yorkshire-based facilities. The recycled materials are then reintegrated into supply chains as raw materials or transformed into new products. Among these is MYBoard, a material akin to plywood.
MYBoard has a range of applications in construction, joinery, shop and event fittings, as well as in furniture for commercial and community environments, such as schools.
‘Commitment’
Steve Carrie, group director of MYGroup, said: ‘Local, in-store collections that actively involve the community are pivotal to the success of the scheme as a whole, with the efforts of the East Lancashire stores a shining example of what is being achieved, nationally.
‘As we continue our partnership with Specsavers, each item recycled underscores MYGroup’s commitment to mitigating the environmental impact of optical waste and redefining the narrative around discarded materials previously deemed “unrecyclable”.
