Murder probe follows Kent waste depot death

Police in Kent are holding a man in his forties following the death of a man at a Cory-run waste and recycling depot in Tunbridge Wells today (March 9).

Full details of the incident, which occurred at around 6 o’clock this morning, are yet to be released, although it has been confirmed that the Police are carrying out a murder investigation. The identities of the two men have yet to be released.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: “Police were called to an address in North Farm Lane after 6am on 9th March as a man had sustained fatal injuries. It is being treated as a murder and a man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in Police custody.”

Refuse and recycling collections across the borough were suspended today following the incident while police carry out investigations at the North Farm Lane site.

The depot is located adjacent to a publicly accessible household waste recycling centre which has remained open today.

Commenting on today’s events, Tunbridge Wells borough council’s head of environment and street scene, Gary Stevenson, said: “Due to an incident at the North Farm Depot this morning, the depot is currently closed and there will be no waste or recycling collections today. Revised collection information can be found on our website.”

In a statement a spokeswoman for Cory said: “We are doing all we can to cooperate with the police investigation into the incident and support our staff at this difficult time.”

Cory has carried out waste and recycling collections on behalf of Tunbridge Wells since 2009, after being awarded a ten-year contract by the borough council. The contract includes refuse and recycling collection services to the borough’s 47,000 households as well as cleansing and litter collection services.
