More WEEE funding available for councils

The PBS is a system to ensure that local authorities can receive free collection of WEEE from civic amenity sites

Councils seeking to increase volumes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected via civic amenity sites have been offered £650,000 in funding, through the latest phase of the Distributor Takeback Scheme (DTS).

The funding is being offered through the DTS WEEE Project Fund to support new projects covering household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) or WEEE collection points.

Funding is available as part of the latest stage of the WEEE Project Fund – which seeks to support collections via CA sites and other collection points

This is separate to a total of £3 million in funding also being offered through the WEEE Compliance Fund, announced this month, which is aimed at increasing the collection of WEEE by local authorities at the kerbside (see letsrecycle.com).

The DTS was set up under the WEEE regulations in 2007 to enable electronics retailers or distributors to meet their requirement to fund the collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), as an alternative to offering in store take-back of goods.

Participating companies pay a fee to join the DTS – with proceeds used to fund and maintain local authority collection points as well as projects to boost the collection of WEEE.

Retailers opting not to participate in the scheme will instead have to set up their own returns scheme for WEEE to collect unwanted items directly from customers.

Applications for funding through the latest phase of the project will be considered from Waste Collection Authorities (WCAs) and Waste Disposal Authorities (WDAs), with potential applicants given a 30 September deadline to submit a funding request.
