The waste management company currently services the area under the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP) which includes Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton.
It was reported in October 2022 that the SLWP was considering not renewing the contract, which ends in March 2025.
The contract with Merton council will begin in April 2025 and will see the waste management company deliver recycling and waste collections alongside winter maintenance services.
Veolia said that it plans to increase recycling capacity for the borough by introducing single chamber Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs).
The council and waste management company added that they would work together to explore alternative fuels for the vehicles, such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, and will also look at electrifying smaller vehicles in the fleet.
Pascal Hauret, managing director of municipal at Veolia, said: “We are delighted to announce that we are the recycling and waste collections and winter maintenance services partner of choice for the London Borough of Merton. Building on our experience, we will work closely with the council to develop collection services whilst supporting them on their journey to net-zero by decarbonising our operations.
“We are looking forward to working in partnership with Merton council towards a more sustainable future that will benefit residents across the borough.”
Additionally, Veolia will work towards the upcoming Simpler Recycling legislation by introducing a food waste collection trial for flats above shops.
It will also operate a weekend Community Mobile Recycling Centre (CMRC) to provide localised services for residents.
In 2023, Veolia launched a nighttime recycling and waste collection service which is set to continue.
Councillor Stephen Alambritis, cabinet member for transport and cleaner streets, said: “Waste and recycling are among the most valued services we provide, and this agreement reflects our shared ambition to deliver a cleaner, greener, and safer borough for all. We look forward to the enhancements secured in our new contract with Veolia and to working together to deliver a reliable collections service for the people of Merton.”
